A Guide to Limerick City

Limerick city guide

Welcome to Limerick! As Ireland’s third largest city, this historic place bounded by the rivers Shannon and Abbey holds something for everyone. Whatever the purpose of your visit, you’ll find a wealth of culture, art, fine dining and good living here in the heart of Ireland.

Limerick has a long history. The oldest part of the city, King’s Island, was originally known as Inis Sibhtonn, but it was also called Inis an Ghaill Duibh, ‘The Dark-(haired) Foreigner’s Island’. Roman maps show a settlement in the area; which was then to withstand a tumultuous history of Viking raids, Norman redesign, and pivotal events during the 17th century’s civil wars. Often called the most beautiful city in Ireland, modern Limerick combines all these historical periods with a contemporary sensibility reflected in her rich culture and nightlife.
