Injections

Dr O’Donoghue has been trained to give injections for conditions such as bursitis, arthritis and tendonitis.  If after a sports medicine consultation, which involves a full History and Examination, it is felt you may benefit from an injection, the risks and benefits of such a procedure will be discussed with you.  Depending on your diagnosis we can offer Corticosteroid or Hyaluronic Acid injections.

Corticosteroids act as an anti-inflammatory and can help alleviate pain and inflammation in tissues and joints.

Hyaluronic acid is a substance that naturally occurs in the human body and it can act as a lubricant and cushion in the joint.

On occasion it may be necessary to aspirate a joint.  This involves removing fluid from a joint by way of a needle and syringe. This is done to alleviate pain and tension within a swollen joint.  It can also help aid in the diagnosis of certain inflammatory conditions such as gout.

Joint Injections are covered by most Irish health insurance plans so contact our Doctors in Limerick today on (061)312291.
