Venesection

At Roxboro Medical Centre, our Limerick doctors provide care to patients who have Hereditary Haemochromatosis.  The treatment of Hereditary Haemochromatosis is by Venesection. Venesection means taking blood at regular intervals to reduce your iron levels.

Hereditary Haemochromatosis is an inherited condition that causes you to absorb too much iron from your food and is common in Ireland. When this iron in the blood becomes excessive it can damage your organs. Hereditary Haemochromatosis is diagnosed by taking a blood sample.  As mentioned above the treatment of Hereditary Haemochromatosis is by Venesection. We provide this procedure here at Roxboro Medical Centre and provide regular follow up and monitoring of this condition for you. Specialist referral is generally not needed and management in primary care is the most appropriate setting for this treatment.

Venesections are covered by the Medical Card Scheme and also by most Health Insurance companies.
